The Strength of Love
How two almost grown kittens can scrunch themselves into the tiny cat
bed by my computer is a mystery. But today Robert and his big bushy
tail were curled into all the space, soundly asleep. Emma jumped up and
hesitated. She seemed to recognize that Robert was asleep, so she nosed
him hello and lay down on the cool granite, her head on the curve of
the bed. Robert roused enough to pull her head down with his paw, gave
her a few licks and fell back into his dreams. No complaints, no
squabbling. I watched in fascination, thinking that this was the
strength of love, of their brother/sister bond, of everything that is
beautiful.
I thought about the painting on my easel, how even through many
changes, I willingly returned to it time and again. Until my vision fit
within its rectangle just as Robert and Emma fit within that tiny bed.
Is that my version of the strength of love, the love of being an artist?
Art and life have their correlations, don't they?

Judging a competition, one artwork against another. It's an honor to be
asked and a responsibility to accept.
I recently judged two very different art competitions, one open to all
artists, the second with a western theme for high school students only.
Two takeaways:
Age doesn't matter; it's the desire to create art to the best of your
ability AT THE MOMENT.
Subject and size don't matter: Best of Show in the open competition was
a large portrait of a young boy playing the violin--excellent drawing
skills and so expressive. The Grand Champion of the student art was a
very small sculpture of an Indian on his horse, their angle believably
indicating a dangerous descent down a mountain.
I was gratified and encouraged that so many young people are turning to
art. And their talent? Oh my gosh, they are bringing it on.

A unique exhibition coming in June 2024.
I love the work of Basia Hawicz -- intricately detailed masks and the
artistry of decorated eggs reminiscent of Fabrege. I invited Basia to
pair her work with my seascapes, with color as the unifying link. Can't
wait for us to curate this concept.
Like they were designed for each other, below Golden Sand and Alpenglow.
