The striking dark-skinned features of the Samburu women of Kenya against their red-orange sarongs and extraordinary beaded necklaces make them my favorite subject to paint. Young children stay close to the mother, and she carries the youngest on her back, braced inside the sarong. As Maasai Mama turned away from the equator sun, her child glanced suspiciously back, and the pose created my favorite painting.
